If you walk the towpath you will be well aware of the Archimedes Screw installation at Dutton Sluice, just upstream of Dutton Lock.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The small hydroelectric power scheme<\/a> adjacent to the sluice gate has a total installed capacity of 200kW, generating approximately 900MWh\/Yr of renewable energy, saving (they tell us) 514 tonnes of CO2 per year.<\/p>\n

Our understanding is that it uses the height difference between the pounds mainly to generate electricity when it is most needed, when the rate paid is highest. This is a vital need, smoothing supply and making up for shortfall when other renewable energy production is low.<\/p>\n
