The crane is in the historic Navigation Yard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A remarkable survivor of Northwich’s industrial past has received national recognition following a successful campaign by local councillors and the River Weaver Navigation Society.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The imposing 35-ton Scotch Derrick Crane, standing beside the River Weaver at the former Navigation Yard in Northwich, has been awarded Grade II listed status following an application by the Society.<\/p>\n

Built in 1923 by William Morgan & Co of Kilwinning, the crane cost \u00a31,449 and was installed to lift heavy lock gates from the river onto railway wagons for transport to the adjoining repair workshops.<\/p>\n

Historic England describes the crane as a rare and early survivor of its type, recognising its importance in the development of electrically powered industrial machinery.<\/p>\n

Remarkably, its original electrical equipment, manufactured by Royce Ltd of Trafford Park, remains in place. The company had close connections with the early development of the world-famous Rolls-Royce motor cars.<\/p>\n

The crane was converted from direct current to alternating current in 1945, but its original controls were retained, making it an even more remarkable piece of industrial history.<\/p>\n

The Grade II listing also includes the surviving railway tracks and turntable used to transport lock gates around the yard.<\/p>\n

John Tackley, President of the River Weaver Navigation Society, welcomed the decision.<\/p>\n

“We are absolutely delighted that this magnificent piece of Northwich’s industrial heritage has received the recognition it deserves.<\/p>\n

“The River Weaver has played an extraordinary part in the development of engineering, shipbuilding and inland navigation, and this crane is a wonderful reminder of those achievements.<\/p>\n

“Although the navigable river extends for only around 20 miles, its contribution to industrial history has been quite remarkable.<\/p>\n

“We hope this recognition will help ensure that future generations can appreciate this fascinating survivor of our industrial past.”<\/p>\n

The Society also welcomed the support for listing from our local councillors, Mid Cheshire MP Andrew Cooper and other heritage organisations.<\/p>\n

The crane now joins several other listed historic structures at Navigation Yard, including the former canal company offices, clock tower and pioneering electrically powered swing bridge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
