The Archimedes Screw

If you walk the towpath you will be well aware of the Archimedes Screw installation at Dutton Sluice, just upstream of Dutton Lock.

The small hydroelectric power scheme adjacent to the sluice gate has a total installed capacity of 200kW, generating approximately 900MWh/Yr of renewable energy, saving (they tell us) 514 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Our understanding is that it uses the height difference between the pounds mainly to generate electricity when it is most needed, when the rate paid is highest. This is a vital need, smoothing supply and making up for shortfall when other renewable energy production is low.
